Most Americans have never heard of Abkhazia; if they have, the response is 'O yes, that's one of the territories Russia has taken over from Georgia.'  Even some Russians will say, 'O yes, that's ours again.' They are both wrong.  Abkhazia is a small nation striving to maintain its independence.  But does it matter to us, Americans?  Our policy matters vitally to Abkhazians, because their status and destiny will be affected by American policies.   It matters indirectly to the United States; affecting our stance toward Russia and the scope of collaboration on a host of international issues that affect our security.

REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA'S DELEGATION CONTINUES ITS VISIT TO LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES

A delegation of the Republic Abkhazia continues its visit to Latin American countries, the press-service for the Foreign Ministry of the Republic of Abkhazia said.

From March 8 till March 12 the Abkhazia's delegation was in Bolivia where it had meetings in the National Assembly, the National Chamber of Commerce, as well as with the representatives of the country's diplomatic corps.  

During the meetings, a wide range of questions connected with the process of establishing interaction and developing cooperation between the sides was discussed.

Today the President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh met with the UN Special Representative, a co-chairman of the Geneva talks on security in Transcaucasia Antti Turunen.

"We've always been on good terms with all UN Mission's representatives. I would like to thank Mr. Johan Verbeke (Turunen's predecessor – Apsnypress) through you, I couldn't do it earlier, for the big job he did  in Abkhazia. I'm ready to answer all the questions that are interesting for you”, the head of the state said welcoming A. Turunen.

Former UN Mediator, EU Special Representative Visit Abkhazia

Ambassador Dieter Boden, who served from 1999-2002 as the UN secretary-general's special representative for the Abkhaz conflict, returned to Sukhumi this week after a seven-year hiatus for talks with Abkhaz leaders, including Sergei Bagapsh, the breakaway Georgian region's de facto president. He will travel to Tbilisi on March 17. EU special representative for the South Caucasus Peter Semneby was scheduled to arrive in Abkhazia on March 11.

Boden is quoted as having argued during his meetings in Sukhumi that it is in Abkhazia's interest to continue participating in the talks in Geneva on security ...

The pictorial memorial to Ardzinba was very touching.

It was a great privilege for me to have known him, both before he became president of Abkhazia and during his tenure in office.
