At the official session of Security Council of the United Nations on January 31st this year the brief technical resolution # 1656 about prolongation of the mandate of UN Watch Mission in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone till March 31st, 2006 had been unanimously adopted. Changes of the format of that resolution SC of the UN and the prolongation term of the mandate of the UN Mission were the coordinated decisions of the Council members in connection with amendments offered by the Russian party to the traditional project of the resolution.

Their main point is abolition of the references to the document of 2001 about "Main principles of differentiation of powers between Tbilisi and Sukhumi" ("D.Boden's document") ...

Abkhazian President Ordered To React To Georgian Bands

The president of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh charged to the heads of the State Security Council and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of republic "and henceforth to react operatively to actions of Georgian bands in the region". As the head of the governmental information Christian Bjania informed IА REGNUM, at the meeting taken place today in Sukhumi with participation of the Minister of Internal Affairs Otar Hetzia and the chairman of the State security service Jury Ashuba, heads of those departments had reported to the leader of the state about the process of investigation concerning members of the Georgian militarized grouping neutralized on January 31st in Gali area.

In a 20 January letter to the UN Security Council, Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh affirmed his willingness to discuss any issues except that of Abkhazia's status...

The so called Friends of the UN Secretary-General (France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, and the United States) mediated talks in Geneva on 2-3 February 2006 between Georgian and Abkhaz government delegations.

The UN representatives impressed on the two conflict sides "the urgent need for tangible results" in the peace process.

They also affirmed that in addition to continuing work on confidence-building measures, including finalizing a formal document on the nonresumption of hostilities and creating conditions for the return to Abkhazia of Georgian displaced persons, the two sides should also address "core political issues of the conflict," ...

Although Abkhazia was the only one to declare its independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union and had unilaterally put on its agenda a federation agreement with Georgia, it unexpectedly found itself under attack by the Georgian army. In this respect, the date of Georgian incursion, August 14, 1992, not only brought great social and economic upheaval, but it also exhausted all possibilities of coming together again with Georgia.

Possessing a federal structure in the Soviet Union together with the autonomous republics of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Adjaria, Georgia chose a unitary state structure when it became independent. In doing this it showed no regard for an autonomous republic structure like Abkhazia`s. ...
