Abkhazia to Vote In a 5-Way Race

When Abkhazia elects a new president on Saturday, observers will be watching closely because the outcome of the vote is hard to predict and it will shape the future of one of the Caucasus’ most strategically important regions.

Officially, five candidates are vying for the tiny Black Sea territory’s leadership, yet only two are seen as having a real chance to win —incumbent president Sergei Bagapsh and former vice president and prime minister Raul Khadzhimba.

Moscow recognized Abkhazia as an independent state together with South Ossetia after the five-day war with Georgia in August 2008. But only Nicaragua and Venezuela have followed suit, and most of the rest of the world continues ...

Russia has wlecomed the vote but Weestern states have said they will not recognise it [EPA]

Voting is under way in the rebel Georgian region of Abkhazia in a presidential election approved by Russia but shunned by Tbilisi and Western states.

Polling stations across the Black Sea region opened at 8am (0400 GMT) on Saturday and are due to close twelve hours later.

Five candidates are in the running for the leaderhip of Abkhazia, which was formally recognised as an independent state by Moscow after a brief war with Georgia in August last year.

Abkhaz Society Increasingly Polarized On Eve Of Presidential Ballot

Abkhazia's voters will go to the polls in the presidential election on December 12.

A journalist for "Der Spiegel" who visited Abkhazia this summer observed that "the Abkhazians are assembling a state with the same level of seriousness and the same irritating attention to detail with which amateur craftsmen build matchstick replicas of the Eiffel Tower."

Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba affirmed on December 10 that "we want [the upcoming presidential election] to serve as an example for neighboring states where democratic elections are a rarity" -- a clear allusion to OSCE observers' less than wholehearted endorsement of the Georgian presidential and parliamentary elections in 2008.

In many ways, it's an election about nothing.

Voters in breakaway Abkhazia go to the polls on December 12 to elect a de facto president. It is the territory's first election since winning recognition for its self-styled independence bid from a handful of countries following Russia's war with Georgia last summer.

The incumbent Abkhaz leader, Sergei Bagapsh, who has the tacit support of Moscow, is the strong favorite in a field of five candidates. Bagapsh's strongest rivals are his former vice president, Raul Khajimba, the runner-up in the hotly contested 2004 election, and businessman Beslan Butba, chairman of the Economic Development Party ...

08/12/2009 19:00       ABKHAZIA, SUKHUM The Spiritual Council of Pitsunda and Sukhum Eparchies of the Abkhaz Orthodox Church addressed the incumbent President Sergey Bagapsh, the Parliament and the Cabinet, the presidential candidates Zaur Ardzinba, Vitaly Bganba, Beslan Butba and Raul Khadzhimba, presidential candidates’ staffs, political parties, public organizations and the people of Abkhazia to remain loyal “to conscience principles, the Orthodox Church canons and the legislation in force of our Motherland”. The Orthodox Church calls all “to exclude violation of morality canons and the God granted code of Apsuara in election speeches and activity”.
