NatPress: Recognition Of Abkhazia To Have Fundamental Continuation - Bagapsh

Recognition of Abkhazia to have fundamental continuation - Bagapsh
15.12.2009

The process of Abkhazia’s recognition will have a major continuation, the newly-elected president of Abkhazia, Sergei Bagapsh, told Itar-Tass in an interview. An agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Abkhazia and the Republic of Nauru was signed in Sukhum earlier on Tuesday.

“It is unimportant how many people are resident in the country Abkhazia has established diplomat relations with. Nauru is a member of the United Nations. This is the first time that we are signing an agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations, in fact, on recognition,” Bagapsh said, adding that it was a long stride forward.

“At the same time the recognition of our independence depends on us a great deal. This is a very pleasant process and it will have a good, fundamental continuation,” he said.

Window on Eurasia: Abkhazia Vote Challenges Republic’s Supporters as Well as Its Opponents

Paul Goble

Vienna, December 14 – Sergey Bagapsh was re-elected president of Abkhazia over the weekend with just over 60 percent of the vote, an outcome that poses challenges both to Moscow, his republic’s chief patron, and to Georgia and the West, which insist that his breakaway republic is illegitimate and thus any elections there invalid.
On the one hand, winning the election in the way that he did – with nearly 40 percent going to his opponents – Bagapsh set himself apart from recent voting in the Russian North Caucasus where leaders routinely claim implausibly large margins of victory, an outcome certain to create problems for Moscow across that region.
And on the other, Bagapsh’s willingness to conduct what appears to have ...
