Red-Cross organizes competition among Abkhazian students     

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - International Committee of the Red-Cross, or IRC, an organization which has been active in Abkhazia since 1992, organized a competition among the Abkhazian students in the field of international social rights.

Students at middle and high levels of education from Gudauta, Gulprish, Ochamcihra, Tkuarchal and Gal gathered together in Sukhum to join a competition in the field of social rights.

The students from Ochamchira ranked first, those from Sukhum second, and those from Gagra third in the competition. Gifts were distributed to all students, teachers and officials who attended the competition. KU/ÖZ/FT

Abkhazia's budget grows     
Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - Abkhazia, a country under partial embargo, saw a growth of 29.3 percent in his budget in only one year to a total of 1.61bn rubles.

A growth of 29.3 percent in mathematical figures equals 364.6mn rubles in financial terms. Hence, public officers will have a pay increase of 30 percent over the past one year. Pay increases will take effect as of January 1, and different rates of pay increases will apply to teachers. Class teachers who teach first-grade students and pre-school teachers will have an increase of 1000 rubles while guidance teachers will have a pay-rise of 200 rubles. The Historical Symbolism of the Abkhaz National Flag

The open white palm on the red background is a symbol of Abkhazian statehood, which was formed at the time of the Abkhazian Kingdom (VIII-X centuries) and encompasses twelve centuries. Such a representation is attested on the coloured Genoese portalans (sea-charts) of the XIII-XIV centuries. A dark-red flag with white palm flew in the Middle Ages above the town of Sebastopolis (otherwise San-Sebastian and the classical Dioskuria, which was founded by the ancient Greeks in the VI-V centuries BC), on which site stands today's capital of Abkhazia, the city of Sukhum.

Ten repatriates, (five from which head various firms, and the other five are individual businessmen) were awarded with the letters of the ministry on taxes of Abkhazia "For contribution to economy and business development, active participation in the state construction".

At the ceremony of the letters’ handling taken place on December 19 in the ministry on taxes, there were present the minister of economy Cristina Ozgan, deputy of the Abkhazian parliament Omar Kvarchija, and employees of the ministry.

Abkhazians remember victims of Lata calamity
Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - The people of Abkhazia commemorated the 15th anniversary of the Lata calamity in which 84 people, including 34 children, were killed when a Russian helicopter was gunned down while it was set to join the work of rescue during the war between Abkhazia and Georgia.
 
The victims' relatives, war veterans and the local people joined the commemorative ceremonies in both Gudauta and Tkuarchal. The Georgian soldiers shot down on December 14, 1992, a Russian helicopter while it was carrying bunches of hopeless people from Tkuarchal to Gudauta. It was brought down while it was flying overhead in the Lata village of Gulprish province.
