ABKHAZ WARY OF GEORGIA'S WESTERN DRIVE

The breakaway republic fears the implications of Georgia's NATO ambitions.

Political leaders in Abkhazia view the prospect of Georgia entering NATO with
deep anxiety, with government officials saying such a move would be a grave
threat to their own hopes of achieving independence, and warning that it could
spur them to move even closer to Russia.

"Above all, we see ourselves as a country allied with Russia," said Sergei
Shamba, foreign minister of the unrecognised republic. "It's well known that
NATO expansion in our region runs counter to Russia's interests.

"If Georgia joins the North Atlantic Alliance, recognition of Abkhaz
independence will become more difficult since the kind of support Georgia will
get from NATO members will be of a different order; it will carry more weight."

European Abkhazians establish center for information
Duesseldorf - The Abkhazian Diaspora in Europe established in the German city of Duesseldorf the Abkhazian Center for Information and Culture in an attempt to convey information about Abkhazia to the West.

The establishment of the Center came after Chairman Guram Gumba of the Commission on International Relations in Abkhazian Parliament held several talks with representatives of the Abkhazian-Abazin Diaspora that live in different European cities.

Gumba was asked by representatives of the Abkhazian Diaspora to reply questions both about the political, economic and cultural developments in Abkhazia and the course of peace negotiations between Georgia and Abkhazia.

Abkhazians set to minimize traffic casualties

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - The civil society of Abkhazia, with a population of approximately 300,000, shows resolution in its recent efforts to minimize traffic accidents. Over 1,000 Abkhazians have died in traffic accidents since 1993.

Drivers drove on Tuesday their cars at 40 km/h to Kelasur from Novii in the capital city of Sukhum in an attempt to demonstrate care for travel safety. The traffic police even accompanied the cars. Arda Inal-ipa, second manager of the Center for Social Programs, said that this kind of an activity came out with support from both civilian and youth organizations. Sukhum declines to accept need for Russian weaponry

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - The Abkhazian administration responded to accusations from Georgia that Abkhazia took in heavy weaponry from Russia.

Garik Samanba, President of Abkhazian Parliament's Committee of Defense and National Security, said that Abkhazia would not need to import heavy armament from Russia because the country is capable of defending itself with its own weaponry.

Samanba said that the Georgian administration came up with such allegations because it tried to divert the attention it was getting while it had to deal with resistance from the opposition. "The democratic values of Georgia actually got damaged," said Samanba. "The Georgian administration is therefore trying to cover up this kind of damage to its democratic system of government amid allegations that Russian tanks were brought ...

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba said the end result of parliamentarian elections that would come after an election campaign on a possible announcement of independence for Kosovo would have serious implications for Abkhazia's chances of getting recognized on an international level.

Khashim Tachi, alias 'snake,' former political leader of the Kosovan Independence Army, which emerged victorious in the Kosovan elections, said if he would get elected prime minister, he would announce the independence right after December 10, when international negotiations over Kosovo are expected to finish. However, after elected prime minister, Tachi said he would act in coordination with both the United States and Europe after he was warned by Europeans not to hurry.
