EurasiaNet.org: Turkey: Ankara Probing For Stronger Ties to Abkhazia

Eurasia Insight:
TURKEY: ANKARA PROBING FOR STRONGER TIES TO RENEGADE GEORGIAN REGION OF ABKHAZIA
Igor Torbakov: 10/08/09
Turkey's efforts to reconcile with Armenia have attracted plenty of attention over the past six weeks. It's less widely known that Ankara is simultaneously engaged in a delicate diplomatic move to forge closer ties with Abkhazia, one of Georgia's renegade territories.
On the surface, Turkey continues to endorse the concept of Georgia's territorial integrity, and senior Turkish diplomats emphasize that "there is no policy change in the Caucasus." But there have been subtle signs of late that Ankara's diplomacy is taking new realities into account. Specifically, in the aftermath of the 2008 Georgian-Russian war, the chances that Abkhazia and South Ossetia will someday reintegrate with Georgia seem completely dashed. [For background see ...

Free Abkhazia.com: Georgia, the GOP and the South Ossetian conflict

Georgia, the GOP and the South Ossetian conflict

Few people in the U.S. have any idea of how our policy in the Caucasus has been determined.   Of course, many probably are not really aware of the region or its significance.  Last year in the midst of the conflict in South Ossetia, Senator John McCain announced that we “are all Georgians.”  It is interesting how he came to that conclusion.  One of McCain’s chief advisors during last year’s Presidential campaign, Randy Scheunemann, is aspecialist in foreign affairs.  He is a registered foreign agent for the Republic of Georgia.  During the period 2004- 2008 alone, his firms were paid over $2,000,000 to advise and lobby the U.S. Government on behalf of Georgia.  He was also paid a reported $70,000 per month by the ...

Abkhazia Conflict Worsens As Russia Escorts Freight Vessels

06 October 2009

CAUCASUS – Once again the simmering political cauldron in the disputed regions appear to be boiling up with Russia’s announcement this week that they are to escort freighters en route to Abkhazia, the Georgian breakaway state.

After the Handy Shipping Guide report last month on the escalation of the conflict after the seizure by Georgia of the MV “Buket” a Turkish owned tanker, there have been several unconfirmed reports of the detention of further vessels. Russia has now confirmed that she will supply patrol craft and armed warships to patrol the waters off the Abkhazian coast and accompany cargo ships headed for the region with supplies.

The Russian are reported to be constructing the infrastructure they require to support their vessels in the Abkhazian ...

AbkhaziaGov: WESTERN POLITICIANS STATEMENTS REGARDING ABKHAZIA ARE BASED ON ILLUSIONS AND CANNOT BE REALISTIC AND LONG-TERM – HEAD OF THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

WESTERN POLITICIANS STATEMENTS REGARDING ABKHAZIA ARE BASED ON ILLUSIONS AND CANNOT BE REALISTIC AND LONG-TERM – HEAD OF THE MINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

03/10/2009 19:40       ABKHAZIA, SUKHUM

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Sergey Shamba considers statements of western politicians regarding Abkhazia as unrealistic and non pragmatic. “The EU countries, the USA and the NATO policy is based on the non existing reality. It is based on illusions and cannot be realistic, pragmatic and long-term”, Sergey Shamba said at a news conference after negotiations with the Russian foreign policy department’s delegation.

According to him, “groundlessness of such a policy is becoming obvious, and sooner or later the West will have to reconsider its positions”.

“Based on the fact that Abkhazia is a part ...

SERGEY SHAMBA: RECOGNITION OF INDEPENDENCE OF ABKHAZIA IS A DIFFICULT CHOICE FOR ANY STATE

03/10/2009 20:30       ABKHAZIA, SUKHUM

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Sergey Shamba believes “the recognition of independence of Abkhazia is a difficult choice for any state because there are a lot of  factors connecting countries to each other, including to Georgia, Europe, the USA”. ”That’s we do not hurry anybody, and should understand that patient, laborious, quiet and daily work is necessary here, exactly what we do”, Shamba said. “We see that gradually the number of these countries is increasing”.

The head of the foreign policy department is sure “Belarus will also be among the first countries which will recognize Abkhazia”.
