STATEMENT ON UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION A64/L.62 FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA

STATEMENT ON UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION A64/L.62 FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA
It is highly ironic that United Nations Resolution A64/L.62 passed today by the 64th General Assembly was sponsored by Georgia as the creation of refugees in this region has been the direct result of 20 years of Georgian aggression and incessant terrorist activities in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
As called for in the Resolution, the Government of Abkhazia stands ready to use the Geneva talks as a forum for constructive dialogue in dealing with the fate of all who were affected by the wars Georgia has imposed on us. We participate in these talks in good faith and honor. There is no question that the situation in our region needs to be settled. There is equally no question that a satisfactory resolution of the human rights environment is essential.
Abkhazia is ready, as a participant in the Geneva discussions, to intensify its efforts to contribute to the establishment of enhanced confidence-building measures and favourable security conditions conducive to creating a durable peace and stability in the region. It is crucial in this connection that Georgia pledges not to use force against Abkhazia and South Ossetia. An agreement on non-use of force, which is a key issue of the Geneva discussions, could dramatically change to the better the security environment of the whole Caucasus region. From this agreement, we could start efforts to rebuild trust between our nations.
We have presented proposals to accomplish these goals several times. Unfortunately, our peace proposals have been rejected by Georgia, which still opts for a military solution of its ungrounded and illegal territorial claims on Abkhazia and South Ossetia. These proposals have been ignored by the co-chairs of the discussions.
The parties involved have the power and authority to change this stalemated status in Geneva in about a month. Abkhazia has the will to cooperate. We hope that the other parties do as well.
Viacheslav Chirikba,
Chief of the Foreign Policy Department
Administration of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia, and
Head of the Abkhaz Delegation in the Geneva discussions
