Abkhazia accuses Georgia of brutality during 2008 attack on S. Ossetia
SUKHUMI, Abkhazia. Aug 6 (Interfax) - Abkhazia's leader has sent a letter to his South Ossetian counterpart in connection with the second anniversary of the start of the 2008 Russian-Georgian war that paved the way for the Russian recognition of the two republics as independent.
"Two years ago, the entire world was able to see the true face of the current leadership of Georgia when a city that was sleeping peacefully was attacked in the early hours on August 8. Mankind was shocked by the brutality with which Georgian forces were killing South Ossetian civilians. The courageous descendants of the ancient Alans heroically safeguarded the freedom of their land, showing miracles of boldness and courage in a fierce fight against the Georgian aggressors," Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh said in his letter to South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity.
Bagapsh said Abkhazians were mourning the slain South Ossetian civilians.
"The leadership of Abkhazia expresses enormous gratitude to the leadership of the Russian Federation and the soldiers of the valiant Russian army for defending the people of South Ossetia, who became the targets of a barbaric aggression from Georgia," Bagapsh said.
"The Republic of South Ossetia is gradually recovering from the wounds inflicted on it during the war, and is embarking on a path of development and creation. Abkhazia wishes peace, wellbeing and prosperity to the fraternal people [of South Ossetia]," he said.
