A mixed group of officials from the UN Development Program (UNDP), the World Food Program (WFP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and UN High Commissary of Refugees, was in Sukhum, capital of Abkhazia, yesterday to have talks with officials here. The group first met with Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba and then with Education Minister Indira Vardaniya.
Vardaniya did a detailed presentation both on problems facing the Abkhazian system of education and achievements the government has had in the field of education.
The group heard words of assurance from Vardaniya that the Abkhazian government is not discriminating against Georgians living in the Gal area on grounds of their access to educational facilities.
Of the entire 174 schools in the country, 63 are Abkhazian, 16 Abkhazian-Russian. There are 20 schools in the Gal area where the language of education is Georgian. The area also has one Russian school. The 10 schools here have Abkhazian as the language of medium as well. Abkhazia has two universities, several technical schools and colleges.
The four international organizations have been carrying out largely socio-economic programs in Abkhazia. When the group met with Shamba, they had an analysis of what the four international organizations have been able to do so far. Shamba offered to form a coordination group of representatives, both from civilian organizations and government, who would check the implementation of UN projects. The UN group will visit the whole of Abkhazia to have a detailed view of the educational situation.
