Moscow / Agency Caucasus – The Sukhum administration reached Monday in Moscow mutual agreement to co-operate with the Russian administration.
News of the agreement came amid growing attention on an attempted attack against the Abkhazian Prime Minister Alexander Ankwab. The agreement, signed between the Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh and the Moscow Mayor Yuri Lujkov, suggests a series of future investment plans in the country.
The deal came after a decision was settled to organize the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi near the border of Abkhazia. It helped to have a greater amount of influence on the region, with on the other hand left less hopeful of re-conquering Abkhazia.
“A joint decision was reached to make investments in Abkhazia in fields of energy and healthcare, among others. We are pleased with socio-economic progress in the country, and we are ready to help improve it,” said Lujkov of the agreement. “It is hard to imagine that the 2014 Olympic Games will be organized in Sochi without participation of Abkhazia,” said Lujkov as an indication of the future Russian investment in the region.
An editorial commentary on the deal came from the Russian economic newspaper Kommersant: “While this deal is aimed at giving Abkhazia a wider Russian coverage of investments, there is now less likelihood of bringing Abkhazia back under its control. It is of symbolic importance to have the agreement signed after Sochi was selected as the location to host the 2014 Olympic Games. Depending on the future status of Sochi as a center of investment and construction, the Moscow administration resolved to financially support the Abkhazian resorts. The more the Russian administration spends on Abkhazia, the less likelihood there is of bringing Abkhazia back under its control. There is also some speculation that the attack against Ankvab just hours before the deal got signed had actually been intended to block the agreement.” CG/KU/ÖZ/FT
