Sukhum/Agency Caucasus - , known for its close interest in North Caucasus , offered to mediate between Abkhazians and Georgians. The Abkhazian administration, however, rejected over again the offer to talk to Tbilisi.
Garri Lahteyn, the Estonian Ambassador to, met in Sukhum, the capital, on Tuesday with the Abkhazian President Sergei Bagapsh and the Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba. Lahteyn called on both Georgia and Abkhazia to start direct negotiations: "There is a need for constructive dialogue that will supply answers to today's facts. is prepared to help effectively in this regard."
Bagapsh said in turn that the Tbilisi administration sent in July a military unit to upper Kodor in violation of a 1994 treaty, and further accused of not observing the United Nations rulings. "The Georgian-Abkhazian negotiation process has recently undergone a radically bad turn. The Georgian administration did everything to halt the peace process," said Bagapsh, and refused to negotiate with Georgian officials until the Kodor problem gets resolved.
The meetings here led to a discussion of the likelihood that the Estonians who fled their homes in the 1992-1993 war can return to Abkhazia. Bagapsh said that his administration is making every effort to get Greeks, Estonians, Jews and people from other nations back to Abkhazia. ÖZ/FT http://www.ajanskafkas.com/haber,16019,detay.htm
