With an application for retirement from the post of the head of the defensive department of Abkhazia Sultan Sosnaliev had submitted to the president on the eve. General-lieutenant S.Sosnaliev explains his decision with the state of his health and necessity of departure to home, to Kabardino-Balkaria. Discharge of the duties of Minister of Defence is assigned to the first assistant Merab Kishmarija.
On May, 8 S.Sosnaliev was received by the president of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh. The leader of the republic named fighting general S.Sosnaliev "legendary person" and “great patriot of Caucasus". S.Bagapsh noted that under S.Sosnaliev’s management the fighting capacity of units and divisions of the Ministry of Defence became much greater lately, as the material support of the Armed forces improved.
A native of Nalchik, S.Sosnaliev served in the USSR air defence armies, having begun his military carrier as a pilot up to the commander of an avia-regiment and the aviacenter chief. Since October 1992 S.Sosnaliev was the chief of the Joint Staff and the first deputy minister of the defense of Abkhazia. Since May 1993 till August 1996 he was the Minister of Defence of Abkhazia. Under the decree of the first president of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba in 1994 S.Sosnaliev was appropriated with the rank of "Hero of Abkhazia" and the grade of general-lieutenant. On February, 25th 2005 S.Sosnaliev was again appointed the Minister of Defence and the vice-premier of the government of Abkhazia.
