SUKHUMI. Sept 14 (Interfax) - The Abkhazian armed forces are strong enough to repel another aggression by Georgia, Deputy Defense Minister of the breakaway republic Garry Kupalba told reporters in Sukhumi on Thursday.
"We have a well-equipped battle-worthy army capable of repelling an aggression," he said.
"There is a huge difference between our armed forces today and what they were in 1992 or even 2000," Kupalba said.
He noted that defense remained the center of the republic's armed forces concept.
"During the last armed standoff between the Swani rebel detachment of Emzar Kvitsiani and Georgian troops in the upper part of the Kodori Gorge, we observed neutrality, which proved to be the right thing to do, although we have reasons to believe that the Georgian side hoped we would let ourselves be dragged into that fight," Kupalba said.
