Saakashvili can dare to military adventure
5.8.2006

"Kommersant" newspaper informed that in immediate proximity from the Russian borders a military conflict ripened. Citizens of the country would inevitably participate in it. The edition informed: "Yesterday in Abkhazia first volunteers from the Northern Caucasian republics of Russia appeared. Commanders of the volunteers declared that they had behind them thousand people from Adygeya, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachaevo-Circassia who would come to protect Russia’s interests. After the operation in Kodori Gorge and announcement of returning the exiled Abkhazian government to Kodori the authorities of the not recognized republic and Georgia prepare for a war".

The volunteers’ leaders warned that they were ready to mobilize thousand fighters. They considered as their basic mission protection of the Russian citizens living in Abkhazia. They also warned that any aggression against the republic would turn back an accident for Tbilisi. However, Abkhazes are sure that they would be protected not only by the volunteers, but also divisions of the Russian army deployed in the possible conflict zone. The president of the republic Sergey Bagapsh told the newspaper that for last year Abkhazia had seriously strengthened its defensibility. At the same time he considered that today from Kodori Gorge not so much military danger, as political one proceeds. The so-called government of Abkhazia in exile, which Saakashvili intends to deliver there, can become an obstacle for the international recognition of the republic. Bagapsh emphasized: "After Georgia had roughly broken all its arrangements, Abkhazia reserves the right to leave any negotiating processes and to return the control over the top part of Kodori Gorge".

Yesterday to Tbilisi the assistant to the USA state secretary on the European and Eurasian countries Matthew Brayza arrived. He supported the operation in Kodori Gorge. They do not exclude that Saakashvili, being encouraged by Washington’s support, could dare to lead a military adventure. But those really seem to become disastrous for Georgia as a united state. Already now the ethnic groupings of Svans and Mengrels are not ready to support Tbilisi in its conflict with Sukhumi. And with the very first volleys Mr. Saakashvili’s scrapped micro-empire just would tear at the seams.
