Peacekeepers' head, U.N. official demand urgent consultations on Kodori

MOSCOW. July 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Maj. Gen. Sergei Chaban, commander
of the CIS  joint  peacekeeping  force  in  the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict
zone, and  Ivo  Petrov,  head  of  the  U.N.  mission  in Abkhazia, have
demanded  an  emergency  four-sided  meeting  on the situation in Kodori
Gorge.
"At  4 p.m. Moscow time the commander of the CIS joint peacekeeping
force and  head  of  the  U.N. mission in Abkhazia held a conference and
decided  to  demand  the  urgent  convocation  of  a  four-sided meeting
[Abkhazia, Georgia, Russia and the U.N. mission] to settle the situation
in and around  Kodori  Gorge,"  Deputy  Commander  of the Russian Ground
Forces for  peacekeeping  Lt.  Gen.  Valery  Yevnevich told the press on
Tuesday.
"By transferring troops and police to the southern security zone in
Kodori Gorge   the  Georgian  side  violated  the  mandate  of  the  CIS
peacekeeping  force  as well as the 1994 Moscow agreement on a ceasefire
and separation of forces," he said.
"Peacekeepers  were sent to the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone under
a decision  of CIS heads of state, while troops have been transferred to
the responsibility  zone of the peacekeepers without any notification of
these heads of state," Yevnevich said.
