Russian peacekeepers' pullout might lead to humanitarian disaster - Abkhaz foreign minister

SUKHUMI. July 18 (Interfax) - The withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict area could lead to a humanitarian disaster, and Russia should not yield to "the Georgian parliament's reckless demands," Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba has said.

"The implementation of the Georgian parliament's decision will lead to another escalation of tensions between Abkhazia and Georgia, a direct contact between the sides' armed forces, and the resumption of military activities," Shamba told Interfax Tuesday.

"The unprecedented increase in Georgia's military spending shows Tbilisi's preparations for a forceful resolution of the Georgian-Abkhaz and Georgian-South Ossetian conflicts rather than a desire to reach a consensus and keep in place the peaceful dialogue," he said.

"Russia should not yield to the Georgian parliament's reckless demands, because it is the main side facilitating the settlement of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict," he said.

"The resumption of military activities will lead to the destabilization of the situation in the North and South Caucasus, which does not meet Russian interests," Shamba said.

In addition, Russia "cannot be indifferent to the fates of its citizens living in Abkhazia and South Ossetia," he said.
