Refugees’ rush from Batumi to Sukhumi: a Georgia’s provocation?
30.6.2006

"If it is a provocation of Georgia with the purpose of escalation of the situation in Abkhazia, we shall take all the measures for its prevention", - the president of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh declared during the press conference on June 29th, making comments on the Georgian refugees’ intention ‘ to reach on foot from Batumi to Abkhazia.

"We have warned the governor of Zugdidi area about that he should not allow mass gathering of people to the Inghiri bridge", - said Bagapsh. - We have the arrangement and pacts, fixing the reasons the refugees would come back for. We return them to Gali area, we shall not retreat an iota from our position". The president of Abkhazia also advised the Georgian authorities to pay more attention to the citizens who now live in the hardest conditions, to pay the basic attention to solving of the social questions, instead of increasing of the military budget. Note: these minutes the president holds the scheduled session of the Security council, among questions they will discuss the refugees’ problem.

Dissatisfied with the actions of the Georgian authorities, about 100 refugees as a token of the protest go on foot to Abkhazia. Refugees began the procession from Batumi where they had left the time habitation in the local hotels. The hotels where refugees from Abkhazia lived last 14 years, were bought by Kazakh investors who are ready to pay each family $7 thousand as indemnification. A part of the refugees who refused the sum, made a decision to return to Abkhazia and to reject the Georgian citizenship. The procession of the refugees was started the last evening. They have already left the territory Adjarian autonomy and on Thursday entered Gurija region in the morning. Meanwhile Georgian authorities do not make comments on the situation in any way.
