30/3/2005 Abkhazia's political status 'is not subject of discussion', says Bagapsh
The Georgian president's demand to the Abkhazian side concerning the conflict resolution has caused a tough reaction of the Abkhazian president. According to Sergey Bagapsh, because of Georgian leaders' statements "Georgian-Abkhazian talks may stop never started".
In his comment on the statements by Georgian leaders that "the Abkhazian society would like if the process of Abkhazia's entering Georgia continues", Bagapsh emphasized they drew conclusions without having precise information about Abkhazia. "Politicians can draw different conclusions trying to convince the press and international community that the Abkhazians are so amenable and use it for the visit of the US president to Georgia on 10 May," the president said.
"The Abkhazian leadership is ready to negotiate with the Georgian side only mutually beneficial economic projects based on the Sochi agreements," the Abkhazian president told a press conference in Sukhum today. He reminded the Sochi agreements provide for the resumption of railway communication through Abkhazia to Georgia and Armenia, the restoration and development of the Inguri Hydroelectric Power Station complex, and refugees' return to the Gali district of Abkhazia.
The president added the Abkhazian leadership had made an unambiguous decision that the return of people who took part in the war against Abkhazia to the Gali district was out of the question. "Those who fought with our state will not live in it," Sergey Bagapsh pointed out.
Abkhazia's political status is not subject of discussion with anybody at any level, Bagapsh stated. "The status of Abkhazia has been established by it citizens on a referendum in 1999. Abkhazia is an independent state, therefore any talks we are ready for will be conducted only on the basis of economic agreements," the Abkhazian leader emphasized at the press conference in Sukhum.
