Civil Georgia: Abkhaz-Russian Commission On Property Disputes Launched

Abkhaz-Russian Commission on Property Disputes Launched
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 29 Oct.'10 / 16:53

Abkhaz leader, Sergey Bagapsh, said on October 29, that "provocative articles” in the Russian press amounted to a pressure on Abkhazia to resolve property-related disputes.

Such approach "will not promote the resolving of the problem,” Abkhaz news agency, Apsnipress, reported quoting Bagapsh.

He made the remarks at the first session of Abkhaz-Russian joint commission, which was established "to secure legality while resolving” property rights of Russian citizens in Abkhazia. The commission includes senior officials from the breakaway region and representatives from the Russian prosecutor’s office and the Russian ambassador to Sokhumi.

Moscow-proposed commission to tackle property disputes of the Russian citizens in the breakaway region triggered controversy and debates in Sokhumi starting from August. The opponents of the proposal criticized it as they feared it could ...

Jamestown Foundation: Abkhaz Muslims Become Target Of Kremlin’s Hidden War

Abkhaz Muslims Become Target of Kremlin’s Hidden War

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
October 14, 2010 02:56 PM

Since little statistical data exists, it is rather difficult to calculate the exact number or relative percentages of Muslims and Christians living in today’s Abkhazia. The leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church in Abkhazia always tries to pretend that there are two or three times as many Christians there as Muslims, which is hardly the reality, especially against the background of the exodus of Georgians from Abkhazia in the early 1990’s. The Muslim leadership, on the other hand, claims that up to nearly 35 percent of the entire population is Muslim, which is likewise difficult to believe since several dozen parishioners at most gather in Sukhumi for Friday prayers.

What in fact is happening there is that since the breakup of ...

‘External Forces Possibly Linked to Abkhaz Mosque Attack’
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 12 Oct.'10 / 11:23

Investigation into Gudauta mosque attack in breakaway Abkhazia is pursuing several potential lines of inquiry, including possible involvement of foreign radical Islamist groups or foreign intelligence services, prosecutor's office of the breakaway region said on October 11.

One man was killed and two others wounded when a group of prayers was attacked by unknown gunmen outside house-turned-mosque in the center of the town of Gudauta, less than 40km northwest to Sokhumi on October 8.

The attack came less than three months after a member of the Spiritual Board of Muslims of Abkhazia, Emik Chakmach-Ogly, was killed in his house in the town of Gagra. Also in July imam at the mosque in Sokhumi claimed that he survived an assassination attempt after he had found an ...

Paper read at the conference "Independence of Abkhazia and Prospects for the Caucasus” organized by the Friends of Abkhazia Civil Initiative. Istanbul, Bilgi University, 30-31 May 2009.

The Russo – Georgian Conflict of August 2008 showed many peculiar features, even by the outrageous standards of warfare. These were evident even before hostilities erupted. One must infer that Georgia’s president, Mikheil Saakashvili, assumed the United States would come to Georgia’s aid, or at least that its might would restrain Russia. Otherwise there is no way to ...

Abkhaz Vice President Survives Fourth Assassination Attempt

Aleksandr Ankvab has survived at least four attacks.

Aleksandr Ankvab has survived at least four attacks.

September 23, 2010
Aleksandr Ankvab escaped with minor shrapnel wounds when an unknown attacker opened fire with a grenade launcher on his home in Gudauta early this morning. It was the fourth (possibly even the fifth) attempt on his life in the past five years.

The motive for today's attack remains unclear, although according to unconfirmed reports Ankvab is perceived as capable of forcing the resignation of embattled de facto President Sergei Bagapsh, who was reelected last December to a second term. Bagapsh has denounced the attack as a bid to destabilize the breakaway Georgian region.

Ankvab is 58 and a lawyer by training. He served in 1992-93 as Abkhaz interior minister under then-President Vladislav Ardzinba, then ...
