CINDERELLA NATION With the Winter Olympics on its doorsteps, Abkhazia has been shut out in the cold By Anna Nemtsova Many feel bitter in the republic of Abkhazia, also known as Apsny, which translates as the Land of the Soul. Five years after the Russian-Georgian war gave the Abkhazians their independence, only Russia, Venezuela, and a few small countries recognize the tiny war-ravaged republic on the Black Sea. And, insult of insults, even its main sponsor, Russia, has shut out the Abkhazians from the party of the decade that is taking place on their doorstep – the Winter Olympics. They have become a Cinderella nation. While the rest of the world celebrates peace and understanding through sports, Abkhazians are left with their noses pressed against the glass, uninvited, uninvolved, and unwanted. There is more. posted by eagle on November, 2013 as Abkhazia
8, November, 2013 If the Abkhaz want to visit the Winter Olympics next February in the Russian city of Sochi, about 25 kilometers to the north, they might need to walk. leadership, but nothing good"
10/12/2012 14:44
Ibragim Yaganov does not understand "why the Abkhazian
leadership voluntarily took on the mission to prove that there was no
Circassian genocide." This was stated by the well-known Circassian public

>> full artcle...

Reflections on Abkhazia: [14 August] 1992-2012Headlines | TUESDAY, 14 AUGUST 2012 06:04 |
The bulk of the world’s ethnic Abkhazians today live in Turkey as part of the North West Caucasian diaspora, their ancestors having lost their homeland as a consequence of Russia’s victory in the 19th-century Caucasian War, which ended in 1864. But it was not Russians who were destined to be seen as presenting the main threat to the well-being (or even survival) of the Abkhazians during the eventful years of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Today, exactly twenty years have passed since Georgian tanks rolled across the bridge over the River Ingur, thereby sparking the war with Abkhazia, which was to last for 14 months and to cost the Abkhazians 4% of their local population, every family in Abkhazia lost at least one of their members ... >> full artcle...
