Kabardino-Balkaria President Arsen Kanokov said in an address about the anniversary that the war was exceptional in terms of its duration -- it lasted from 1763 until 1864 -- and its brutality.

He claimed that the incorporation of the Circassians into the Russian state saved them from "internecine fighting and endless wars in the Caucasus."

It's been 100 years as the Circassian-Russian War is finished. The
longest ever war Russia turned to be to participate in. It caused
catastrophic consequences for our people. More than 90% of the Nation
were either annihilated or exiled outside the historical Homeland.
Circassia as a country ceased to exist and dissapeared from the
political map of the world. Let us remember forever the courage of our
ancestors and never forget hundreds of thousands murdered innocent
Circassian civilians.
A century and a half past however our people are still in great
danger. Within the historical Homeland Circassians divided into 6
adjoining to each other Russian administrative units which is
obviously contradict to the international law. More than 80% of the
Nation is scattered around 50 different states of the world being
actively assimilated.
We call all the Circassians of the world in the name of restoration of
our Nation and our Motherland ...
